Make a Change

Welcome to Wednesday! You've hit the middle of the work week - keep at it! To those with whom ABS does business, we'd like to say that we appreciate your hard work.

Next week, I'll be heading for one of our company's Quality Assurance trips. I hop on a plane and make visits around the country to some of our customers. I want to make sure that they are happy with our service.

These trips are good for both parties. First, our customers like it because it gives them a chance to see ABS face-to-face and get answers, give comments, and even complain if they feel that we need to improve in our service. Second, I like it because it gives me an appreciation for the hard work that goes on in title departments of the many corporations we serve. I'm also given an opportunity to give suggestions and ask questions that may help a company improve their process. Which brings me to today's subject...

Occasionally I'll chat with a business who admits that their paperwork process is monstrously slow, but they don't want to rock the boat by making changes and streamlining their workload. I'm puzzled but not shocked; the world has seen innovations and inventions that at first were looked at skeptically, but then greeted enthusiastically. For instance, the initial reaction to the first roller coaster was fear and trepidation. The world's first roller coaster opened in 1884 at Coney Island , New York . It was designed by Lemarcus Thompson, a former Sunday school teacher. People were hesitant, but after the first few brave souls jumped on board, the ensuing lines were blocks long.

Up until the 1870s, baseball was played without the use of gloves. When gloves were introduced, the first reaction was disdain, but after players got through whole seasons without broken fingers, gloves became the standard.

Many people shook their head at the idea of investing in a little company called Coca-Cola. Those who saw the potential never regretted it. Think about it: If you invested a few dollars in the initial stock, your family's future generations would have profited greatly. A single share of Coca-Cola stock, purchased in 1919, when the company went public, would be worth well over $100,000 today.
