Keep It Honest

We're getting a lot of rain these past few days, and since the cooler weather reminds us of the coming season, the conversation in town starts drifting towards autumn. You'll hear people chatting about the college football season, raking leaves, and yes, Halloween. In order to promote a safe holiday night, many stores, charities and churches will host small events and give away candy. Of course, there's still the old door-to-door method that works so well in our neighborhood. We're reminded of the popular children's phrase "trick or treat!"

It's a nice phrase for a night like Halloween, but it has no good business sense. The businesses with whom you do business want straightforward answers and clear communication. Lying won't go very far. There are no tricks to serving customers, co-workers and corporations - just learn to treat them right.

The well-known business story of years ago told about the Douglas Aircraft Company's fervent competing with Boeing to sell Eastern Airlines its first big jets. It is said that the famous war hero Eddie Rickenbacker, the president of Eastern Airlines, told Donald Douglas that the specifications and claims made by Douglas's company for the DC-8 were close to Boeing's on everything except noise suppression. Rickenbacker then gave Douglas one last chance to out-promise Boeing on this feature.

Douglas went back and conferred extensively with his researchers and engineers, and headed back to Eastern Airlines to give the answer. Douglas reported that he didn't feel he could make that promise. Rickenbacker replied, "I know you can't, I just wanted to see if you were still honest." And he gave him the contract, asking him to continue to work on that noise suppression.

This story sticks with me, because I like honest people. Douglas didn't try to trick Eastern Airlines. I like the man. Everyone wants the truth, not tricks.

I'm not sure if this is the best use of English, but we can state it simply this way: We work hard, and we work honest.
